Several weeks ago, a few folks met with Pastor Nicole to talk about ways to increase the visibility of First Church in the community and beyond. We were concerned that the word was not getting out that we are a very special Open and Affirming congregation that values, respects and honors all people. At the same time, we were feeling that our own First Church families with children, youngsters and teens were not being served as well as they might be. There was so much to think about and it was hard to know where to start. Here are a few ideas that we’re considering: ? Upgrading our website, making it more vibrant with pictures of parishioners (taken during Christian Education Sunday.) We will specifically invite people we know to join us for worship and tell them why they may want to be part of this vital community. This is a big undertaking but it is beginning. ? Creating a Youth Zone in conference room 2 (former library), where kids can go during coffee hour so that parents may have some adult time with friends after worship. This work is done except for finding the right type of furniture to lounge in. If you have something you think might work, please call the church office. ? Giving a small loaf of Friendship Bread to new folks that worship with us on Sunday morning. These loaves could be easy, quick breads that would be delivered to homes by parishioners who might enjoy getting involved in this small way. Please call Sue Williams (688- 1038.) ? Creating a tag phrase like this…#LOVE FIRST. This takes into consideration our families and our values. It might also be read as “Love at First (Church.) We think this is who we are and want to continue to be. ? Establishing a nursery in the church. As part of the outreach to our young families, we are creating an infant area in part of the Parker Room to be ready in September. ? Publicly recognizing and supporting other religions. You may have seen our “RAMADAN BLESSINGS” signs as part of our genuine care of our Muslim neighbors. ? Proudly displaying our open and affirming flag. In response to the horrendous killings in Orlando, First Church hosted a town-wide service and now displays the rainbow banner outside the church. We will be looking for more volunteers to join us in the months to come. Thank you in advance for your participation! Pastor Nicole Yonkman, Stephanie Stone, Steve Porcaro, April Vines, Sue Williams
