At First Church, children and families are an important part of our community and there are many programs and events especially for them.
On Sundays during the school year, child care is available for in our nursery for babies and children up to four years old. Children and youth in kindergarten through 8th grade are welcome in our Church School every Sunday. Children and youth sit with their parents during the beginning of the worship service. Following the “Children's Moment”, a special short sermon aimed towards kids, they are dismissed to their Church School classes. Everyone who works with our children and youth has passed a background test and has been trained in our Safe Church policy.
We welcome children and youth to participate in worship by joining our Children's Choir, the Spark Singers, or Youth Band, and by participating in our Christmas Pageant. Youth in 8th and 9th grades are invited to join Confirmation Class, which is offered during the school year. After completing these classes and participating in Confirmation Sunday, these youth become full members of First Church.
Throughout the year we hold special, seasonal events for children and youth including an our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, our Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, our Christian Education Sunday Worship and Picnic, our Homecoming Picnic, and our Advent Fair.
We also offer meet-ups, supervised by our Associate Pastor, Rev. Adrienne Arms at spots around Windsor such as the Bean coffee shop and Bart's Diner. In warmer weather, children and youth and their parents are invited to join us for pool parties and hikes around Northwest Park.
Children and youth are always welcome to get involved in our Mission and Outreach initiatives, such as preparing hygiene kits for the homeless, gathering supplies for the local food bank, or helping to put together care packages for our young people away at college or in the military. Each Summer, youth in 6th through 12th grade are invited to join our Youth Service Learning Trip. In 2018, we traveled to the Maine Seacoast Mission. Here, our young people worked to repair damaged homes and learned about some of the challenges facing rural communities. In 2019, we traveled to Oceanside, CA, to learn more about the struggles facing migrant communities on our Southern Boarder.
In May of each year, our Scholarship Committee meets to begin the process of awarding scholarships to high school seniors and returning college students who have remained active in the life of First Church. We also provide scholarships for church children and youth to attend Silver Lake Summer Camp. Please note that Summer Camp 2020 is cancelled due to COVID-19.
For parents, we offer a new initiative called Pub Theology which is held on the second Wednesday of the month. Adults are invited to gather for some drinks and conversation at the Hungry Rhino in Windsor Locks from 6:30 to 8 p.m. while we provide child care.
