Children & Families

At First Church, children and families are an important part of our community and there are many programs and events specially for them.

Children and youth in kindergarten through 8th grade are welcome in our Church School every Sunday. Children and youth sit with their parents during the beginning of the worship service. Following the “Children's Moment” (a special, short sermon aimed towards kids), they are dismissed to their Church School classes. Everyone who works with our children and youth has passed a background test and has been trained in our Safe Church policy.

We welcome children and youth to participate in worship by joining our Children's Choir, the Spark Singers and by participating in our Christmas Pageant. Youth in 8th and 9th grades are invited to join Confirmation Class, which is offered during the school year. After completing these classes and participating in Confirmation Sunday, these youth become full members of First Church.

Throughout the year we hold special, seasonal events for children and youth including an our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, our Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, our Christian Education Sunday Worship and Picnic, our Homecoming Picnic, and our Advent Fair.

Children and youth are always welcome to get involved in our Mission and Outreach initiatives, such as preparing hygiene kits for the homeless, gathering supplies for the local food bank, or helping to put together care packages for our young people away at college or in the military. Each Summer, youth in 6th through 12th grade are invited to join our Youth Service Learning Trip. In 2018, we traveled to the Maine Seacoast Mission. Here, our young people worked  to  repair  damaged  homes  and  learned  about  some  of  the  challenges facing rural communities. In 2019, we traveled to Oceanside, CA, to learn more about the struggles facing migrant communities on our Southern Boarder.

In May of each year, our Scholarship Committee meets to begin the process of awarding scholarships to high school seniors and returning college students who have remained active in the life of First Church.
